Having turned, as soon as you loosen the grip the steering wheel will spin back to
the straight position by itself (“self centre”) - do not give it a free hand,
maintain light grip and straighten as needed.
Refrain from using the wheel spokes to steer, holding onto the inside
of the wheel, crossing hands under the wheel, and from using the steering
wheel as support for your body weight (the left foot support is designed for
the latter).
One
more steering technique called “palming” is only used when you
need to quickly reverse with several turns: instead of grasping the wheel,
push your palm against its rim hard enough to turn the wheel by moving your
open hand around, while your palm stays on the same 12 o’clock place on the
rim, corresponding to the straight wheels position. This way you always know
the car will go straight backwards when your palm is at 12 o’clock.
