Merging lanes

When a neighbouring lane ends:

·       If the lane divider ends before the lanes merge and vehicles do not have to cross the separating line to merge, the vehicle in front has the right of way, and rules for changing lanes do not apply to that vehicle, though it has to signal change of direction.

Hence, if you are merging without crossing a lane divider, signal turn to the side you are merging, give way to any vehicle ahead, but to none behind you.

This situation is also known as a “zip merge”, and is typically indicated by the sign “Merging Traffic” (“Form 1 Lane” or “Form 2 Lanes” sign may also be present).

Note a “Form 1 Lane” sign on the right, and marking on the road.
