SPEED

School zone

Speed limit everywhere except South Australia is 40 km/h

between 8:00-09:30 AM and 2:30-4:00 PM on schooldays;

in South Australia – 25 km/h 24 hours 7 days a week.

The school zone ends where you pass either an “End School Zone” sign or another “Speed Limit” sign.

Though the most common speed limit is 40 km/h, it may be as low as 25 km/h – see on the “School Zone” sign (ARR r.23).

School zone flashing lights mounted in some areas flash during the restricted hours.
The most common hours are from 8:00 to 09:30 AM and form 2:30 to 4:00 PM, but may vary depending on the school – see on the “School Zone” sign.

In South Australia the School Zone speed limit of 25 km/h applies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at any time a child or student is present. (Ref.#8 p.42, 43.)

Avoid a known red traffic light ‘speed reset’ psychological trap that often causes overspeeding in the school zone. For example, driving in a 60 km/h road, you slow down to 40 km/h at a “School Zone” sign, and after a while stop at a red traffic light; when the light changes to green, you wrongly tend to continue at 60 km/h.

School zone restrictions do not apply on public and school holidays.
